Lower-extremity venous stasis is a frequent disorder, sometimes caused by environmental factors, particular working habits (sedentary work, standing for several hours a day, or use of special footwear) transient hormonal alterations (pregnancy, menopause) or actual disorders of the venous circulation, as in the case of chronic venous insufficiency.
In all these cases, the microcirculation is subjected to particular stress, leading to organic and functional alterations which are manifested in the tissues by specific symptoms affecting the foot, ankle and leg.
These symptoms range from reddening, swelling and pain of the foot and ankle (known as "warm vascular foot") to superficialization of the capillary network and development of hyper pigmentation of the skin of the foot, ankle and leg, which is typical of chronic venous insufficiency.
